Surf
What a run that was: Hurricane Marie plus king tides brought the biggest surf in years, 20 foot backwash at Aliso, waves washing over south end decks, The Wedge going wild. This week the ocean calms down: leftover waist to chest high south swell through Saturday, fading early next week. Water 72. South end beaches are stripped to rock in places, so watch your entry.

Laguna Lore
The Pirate Tower at Victoria Beach turns 100 this year. It was built in 1926 as a staircase, sixty feet of stone so the family above could get down to the sand. The pirate came later: in the 1940s the new owner, a retired naval officer named Harold Kendrick, liked to dress as one and hide coins in the rocks for local kids. The name stuck. That's it for this week, see you out there!
